Retail Manager

Job Overview: The Retail Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the beach shop, ensuring exceptional customer experiences, strong team performance, and efficient store operations. This leadership role manages retail staff, maintains visual merchandising standards, monitors inventory levels, and drives sales performance while creating a fun, welcoming, and organized shopping environment for guests.

The Retail Manager plays a key role in delivering a seamless and elevated retail experience that reflects the Rockaway Ocean Club brand and beach lifestyle. Success in this role requires strong leadership, communication, organization, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, seasonal hospitality environment.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Team Management

  • Supervise, train, schedule, and support Retail Associates and seasonal retail staff.

  • Foster a positive, team-oriented work environment focused on customer service and operational excellence.

  • Lead by example in providing exceptional guest interactions and maintaining professionalism.

  • Assist with onboarding and training team members on store procedures, POS systems, and product knowledge.

  • Monitor staff performance and provide coaching and feedback as needed.

Customer Service & Sales

  • Ensure all guests receive friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable service.

  • Resolve customer concerns or issues promptly and professionally.

  • Drive sales performance through product recommendations, upselling, and promotional initiatives.

  • Support the implementation of seasonal promotions, merchandise launches, and in-store events.

  • Maintain awareness of guest trends and provide feedback to leadership on customer preferences and product opportunities.

Store Operations

  • Oversee daily store opening and closing procedures.

  • Ensure accurate cash handling, register balancing, and transaction processing.

  • Maintain visual merchandising standards, displays, and overall store presentation.

  • Ensure cleanliness, organization, and safety throughout the retail space.

  • Monitor inventory levels and coordinate restocking and merchandise replenishment.

Inventory & Merchandising

  • Assist with inventory management including receiving shipments, tagging merchandise, and conducting inventory counts.

  • Verify shipment accuracy and report damaged or missing items.

  • Maintain organized stockrooms and storage areas.

  • Ensure products are properly displayed, priced, and rotated based on seasonal demand.

Operational Support

  • Coordinate with other departments during special events, high-volume weekends, and seasonal activations.

  • Monitor store performance and assist with achieving sales goals and operational targets.

  • Report maintenance, safety, or operational concerns to management promptly.

  • Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and brand standards.

Required Skills / Qualifications:

  • Flexibility to work weekends, holidays, evenings, and varied shifts.

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; additional retail or management training preferred.

  • Minimum 1–3 years of retail, hospitality, or customer service management experience preferred.

  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.

  • Ability to multitask and perform effectively in a high-volume, fast-paced environment.

  • Experience with POS systems, cash handling, and inventory management preferred.

  • Strong organizational and problem-solving abilities.

  • Ability to motivate and manage seasonal staff effectively.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods.

  • Lift and carry items weighing up to 40 pounds.

  • Perform tasks requiring bending, reaching, climbing, and repetitive motions.

  • Ability to work in indoor and outdoor beach environment conditions.
